Montego Bay, Jamaica's second city, is known as the tourist capital of Jamaica. This city which was just a rural town, is backed by picturesque low mountains. In 1980, Montego Bay was proclaimed Jamaica's city by act of parliament. However, this has not meant that it has acquired any form of autonomy as it continues to be an integral part of the Parish of St. James. Most of the coastline near Montego Bay is occupied by numerous tourist resorts, most of which are newly built, some occupying the grounds of old sugar cane plantations with some of the original buildings and mill-works still standing.
From all of these, the most famous two are the White Witch's Rose Hall and Tryall properties, both of which now feature world-class golf courses. Montego Bay is served by Jamaica's largest airport, the Sir Donald Songster International Airport. Regional and several North American and European airlines run their Caribbean hub the (Songster International Airport) in Montego Bay. These operations are designed to connect the island of Jamaica easily, with the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada. South Florida's Miami and Hollywood international airports can be reached within 70 minutes from Montego Bay.
Other U.S. cities such as Charlotte, Houston, Atlanta, and Tampa can be reached by nonstop flights in less than three hours. Other locations like Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., and Chicago can be reached in under four hours. Major European cities such as London, Frankfurt, Berlin, Milan Amsterdam averages ten hours.

Attractions in the city of Montego Bay are minimal. Being a city, the resort area of Montego Bay does not have a lot of tourist attractions inside the city. If you are holidaying in Montego Bay, your nearest attractions are the Rose Hall Great House, Greene Wood Great House, Martha Brae River Rafting and the Rock-lands Bird Sanctuary. All of these are within forty five (45) minutes of any accommodation site in Montego Bay. If you are in for additional activities, adventures, and attractions, most of these are found outside the city; to as far as the Blue Mountains for birding, hiking, and Coffee Plantation tours, Ocho Rios for Dunns River Falls and other activities. On various occasions, visitors travel as far as to the town of Port Antonio which located on the northeastern shores of Jamaica in order to experience the real feel of the island.
Excursions are also done to Appleton Estates rum distillery, Apple Valley Plantations, Black River Safari, Lovers Leap and Ys Falls, which are south of that city. Although it is rather far, people staying in Montego Bay do travel all the way to Kingston to see the Bob Barley Museum, Culture Yard, Devon House and other places of interest.
